Brent St. Germain: King cake is my kryptonite
Living in south Louisiana definitely has its perks.
Unlike other places that have only four seasons — spring, summer, fall and winter — south Louisiana residents have an abundance of seasons to revel in.
Seafood lovers get their crawfish and shrimp seasons. Football fans have their season, and it doesn’t matter if donning the black-and-gold of the New Orleans Saints or the purple-and-gold of the LSU Tigers. Outdoor enthusiasts have hunting and fishing seasons.
But not all seasons are good. Hurricane season is a time when many south Louisiana residents are keeping a keen eye on the tropics.
For many, there is one season on the top of the list: Mardi Gras season. From floats to beads to doubloons to outright partying, Mardi Gras is a time many south Louisiana look forward to each and every year. It involves good food, good friends and good times.
But with Mardi Gras comes something anyone trying to lose weight both loves and despises. It’s none other than king cake.
I’m not going to lie to you: I have sampled a few pieces of king cakes in recent weeks. In fact, it was tough to avoid because everywhere I turn, there it is. Every Friday, we have king cake delivered to the office, and others bring some just for the heck of it.
King cakes are everywhere, and I have tried my best to avoid eating a few pieces. Some days, I do fine and walk right past the various king cakes, but other days, I want to sample each one.
In other words, king cake has been my kryptonite in recent weeks.
For someone who recently had weight-loss surgery, the last thing I need is extra sugar, starch and preservatives in my diet. Those ingredients are recipe for disaster, and my sluggish weight loss in recent weeks is proof of that.
Basically, I need to kick the king-cake habit and get back on the right track.
Luckily for me, Mardi Gras ends very soon, and that means no more king cakes and no more kryptonite.
Eating the right foods is the No. 1 way I can shed more pounds following weight-loss surgery. I need to push away the sugars and starches and focus more on proteins.
With crawfish season underway and shrimp season on the horizon, I have good feeling that better times are ahead in my weight-loss journey. Crawfish and shrimp may be the proteins I need to kick the king-cake habit.
Maybe I can turn those seasons into my new kryptonite, which would be another step in the right direction toward and healthier lifestyle.
Starting weight (April 1): 401.2 pounds
Surgery weight (April 15): 383 pounds
Current weight (as of Dec. 31): 297.6 pounds, for a total weight loss of 103.6 pounds.
Remaining pounds to lose to reach goal: 99 pounds
