Crusaders take fifth place at state

COOS BAY — The St. Mary’s girls basketball team earned fifth place at the Class 3A state tournament after falling to Vale, 55-27, at Marshfield High on Saturday.

Rose Alvarez, playing on an injured ankle, scored six points and Adrien Birmingham and Dakotah Rothfus had five points apiece for the Crusaders (16-12), who trailed just 16-14 after the first quarter before managing only two points in both the second and third periods.

The loss was the end of a surprising journey for St. Mary’s, which entered the year with modest expectations with a small roster and some big losses to graduation.

“I couldn’t be happier,” St. Mary’s head coach Richard Vasey said. “It’s always a goal to make it to the tournament. The way these kids came together at the end, particularly the seniors, it seemed like once they got a sniff of it, it changed their whole attitude.”

Going up against the Vikings, last year’s 3A state champions, proved to be a tall order. The Crusaders went 11 of 49 from the field and 1 of 5 from the free-throw line.

“It was tough,” Vasey said.

Rothfus added six rebounds and Viv Juncal finished with four points and four assists.

Madison Johnson led Vale (26-2) with 17 points.
