Spartans win series, advance to semis

The Southern Oregon Spartans downed Seattle, 9-1, to sweep their best-of-three Western States Hockey League divisional quarterfinal series at The RRRink on Saturday.

The Spartans will next travel to face the Missoula Maulers in a best-of-three divisional semifinal series. Game 1 is Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Missoula, Mont. The second match and, if necessary, a third match will also be there.

Southern Oregon led 4-0 after first period and held a 6-0 advantage before Seattle tallied. Billy Saxon recorded two goals and Marcus Miller, Nick Pagliacci, Logan Meyers, Drew Carriere, Tyler Spencer, Mackenzie Wood and Doug Gutierrez also scored for the Spartans, who outshot the Totems, 52-27.

Spartans goalkeeper Tyler Edelkoort III made 26 saves for Southern Oregon, which went 11-0 against Seattle this season.

The Totems recorded 24 penalty minutes on nine infractions, while the Spartans had 16 penalty minutes on five infractions.
