Maulers cruise by Spartans
The Missoula Maulers scored twice in two minutes to build a first-period advantage and secured a 5-1 Western States Hockey League victory over the Southern Oregon Spartans with three unanswered goals later on during action Saturday at The RRRink.
Parker Todd and Justin Barnes each tallied for the Maulers inside the final seven minutes of the first period to create a cushion. Southern Oregon (33-17) answered with a goal by Jan Kerekanic just over three minutes into the second period, but Missoula’s Tyler Zandhuisen struck just 14 seconds later to regain momentum for the Maulers.
Damon Hanson and Misha Akatnov closed the scoring for Missoula (37-12) in the third period.
Spartans goalie Austin Toussaint made 30 saves and Maulers goalie Tanner Loucks had 34.
The teams face off again at 1:30 p.m. today at The RRRink.
