Dennis Richard Smith Sr.

Dennis Richard Smith Sr., 83, returned to his heavenly home May 5, 2016. His devotion to family and his firm belief in Jesus Christ supported him and his family during his illness and ultimately gave him peace. He was born August 15, 1932 to Judson “Dean” and Mirian Smith, a machinist and a homemaker respectively, in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Dennis was immersed in a Christian community from an early age that would be his lifelong support. After graduating from San Diego High School, Dennis attended the U.S. Naval Dental School in Great Lakes, Ill. Dennis served in the United States Air Force as a dental assistant. Staff Sergeant Smith was honorably discharged in 1955.

Dennis was blessed with a large and loving family. He married Norma Tarango Smith September 16, 1956 in Yuma, Ariz. From the very beginning, Dennis was dedicated to his wife and family, instilling in them a strong work ethic to,

“Do the right thing or don’t do it at all.” His faith and love for the Lord has created four generations who believe in God's love, mercy, and grace as the foundation of their lives.

He was in the insurance industry for over 40 years. He retired from The Protectors Insurance agency as the managing partner in 1997. As a member of Rotary Club, Dennis received the Paul Harris Fellow award. In 1989 Dennis became an American record holder for total weight-lift in the masters category recognized by the U.S. Powerlifting Federation and in 1993 achieved a bronze medal at the World Masters Powerlifting Championships in Toronto, Canada. Dennis continued to enjoy many hobbies, including his car collection, horses, and daily physical workouts.

Dennis is survived by his beloved wife, Norma; his sons, Dennis Jr. and Dean Smith; his daughters, Denise Combs, Debra Harthun, and Deanne Brown; 19 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Carver and his parents.

A memorial service will be held in Dennis’s honor at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 23, 2016 at the Applegate Christian Fellowship in Ruch, Ore. Pastor Joe Stroble will officiate the service.

In lieu of flowers, family and friends may consider memorial contributions to Providence Hospital Community Health Foundation. The Smith family is forever grateful for the compassionate and loving care Dennis received while at Providence.
