Soroptimist supports seniors' 'happy feet'
As we age, especially if we have diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, neuropathy, or other issues, it can be difficult to reach and care for our feet. For this reason, the Soroptimist International of Ashland (SIA) Health Committee has provided support to the Ashland Senior Program Foot Care Clinic for many years. According to Christine Dodson, senior program manager, “The generosity of Soroptimist over the years has been overwhelming. They have donated $11,000 over the past decade in support of this Foot Care Clinic.”
Glenda Rackleff, R.N., and Heidi Gottlieb, R.N., specially trained and certified in foot care, spend one day each month at the Senior Center providing foot care to seniors, who otherwise would not be able to afford it. The nurses donate a portion of their time and the SIA funds subsidize the service. As a result, seniors pay a reduced rate for the service.
“Bravo to Soroptimist for their ongoing support of this much-needed program,” says Rackleff. "It is so important for someone’s feet to be function properly. If foot care is neglected in an older adult, it can affect nearly all aspects of their daily life. This is a very important community service.”
The Ashland Senior Center at 1699 Homes St. in Hunter Park is a division of the Ashland Parks & Recreation Commission. The senior program “strives to provide a support system to the older residents of Ashland … helping … them to live more independently and continue as contributing members of the community … The Senior Center provides a venue for social interaction through recreational and health related activities and educational opportunities.”
