OSU's Casey wins 800th game
CORVALLIS — Bryce Fehmel and Max Engelbrekt combined to one-hit Ball State Thursday as fourth-ranked Oregon State won 2-0 at Goss Stadium and handed coach Pat Casey his 800th victory at Oregon State.
Fehmel shut down the Cardinals (8-5 overall), limiting Ball State to a second-inning single by Colin Brockhouse. The sophomore struck out four, walked one and faced 26 batters for his second victory of the season.
Engelbrekt came on in relief of Fehmel in the ninth, recording his fourth save of the season after striking out two.
Oregon State (11-1) scored both of its runs in the second. Andy Atwood scored on a wild pitch, then watched as Nick Madrigal drilled a run-scoring single to the gap in right center.
Casey became the eighth coach in Pac-12 Conference history to reach 800 wins. No. 7 on the wins list is Frank Sancet, who won 831 games at Arizona from 1950-72.
OREGON 6, SANTA CLARA 2: At Santa Clara, Calif., Oregon held Santa Clara to 1-for-10 hitting with runners in scoring position in the nonconference game.
