Hazel I. Deane

September 15, 1922 - January 26, 2018

Hazel I. Deane passed away Friday, January 26 at Ashland Community Hospital, after falling ill that same day. Hazel was a long-time resident of Ashland, having lived there since 1982. She was born September 15, 1922 in Ipswitch, England. She lived in England throughout WWII and survived the Blitz in London. She volunteered as a Girl Scout Headmaster during the war, and one day returned with her group to their building after an outing to find that the building had been totally destroyed by a bomb. She immigrated to the U.S. at the end of WWII.

In the early 1950s, she worked as a bookkeeper for Dudley Deane and Associates in San Francisco. She married William Dudley Deane there in 1957 and resided with him in various places in California for the next 25 years, and in Ashland for an additional 20 years, until his death in 2002. In the 1960s, they lived in San Rafael, California, and Hazel volunteered at Sunny Hills, a non-profit which has helped at-risk children and adolescents since 1895. She also volunteered for the Marin Ballet Company at that time. Starting about 1970, Hazel volunteered to help poor and underfed youth in an ashram in India. In Ashland, she became one of the first Reiki Masters in the U.S. She volunteered in local hospitals doing Reiki healing for patients. She delivered meals for Meals on Wheels. She was a member of and volunteered for the local parish of Trinity Episcopal Church, running the book store, doing rummage sales, and helping with flower arrangements for funerals and events.

In California, Hazel was a member of various Episcopal Church parishes, the Marin Art & Garden Club, the Peacock Gap Country Club, the Peacock Gap Garden Club, the Silverado Country Club in Napa, and the Menlo Country Club in Menlo Park. In Ashland, she was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, OLLI lifelong Learning (Southern Oregon University), Reiki Masters of North America, and Siddha Yoga.

Throughout her long life, Hazel enjoyed many different hobbies, including golfing, fly fishing, flower arranging, gardening, traveling all over the world, yoga, reiki, and healing.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 45 years, William Dudley Deane; her daughter, Jennifer; her sister, Jean Howard Olley; and her brother, Jack Howard. She is survived by her stepdaughter, Jacqueline Deane Schmidt (Kurt) of San Rafael, Calif.; her stepson, Robert Dudley Deane (Barbara) of Pacific Grove, Calif.; her grandson, Wilson Hunter Deane of Pacific Grove, Calif.; her grandson, James Deane of Ashland (who was raised by her and her husband, and lived with Hazel and cared for her for the past 10 years); as well as several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews in the U.S., the U.K., and New Zealand.

There will be a Memorial Service at 10 a.m. Friday, February 23, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Anthony Hutchinson at Trinity Episcopal Church, 44 Second St., Ashland, OR. In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to Trinity Episcopal Church, Ashland, Ore.
