Royals trade Ashland High grad Sam Gaviglio to Blue Jays
Ashland High School grad Sam Gaviglio is on the move.
After designating him for assignment over the weekend, the Kansas City Royals traded Gaviglio to the Toronto Blue Jays for cash considerations or a player to be named later on Wednesday, according to a Blue Jays team announcement.
Gaviglio — who had a 10.29 ERA in five appearances this spring — was part of the Royals’ latest round of roster cuts and was cleared from their 40-man roster to make room for newly-signed relief pitcher Justin Grimm.
Gaviglio was claimed by the Royals last September after the Seattle Mariners put him on waivers.
He finished the 2017 season with a 4.36 ERA in 74 1/3 innings spanning over 16 appearances (13 starts) between the Mariners and Royals.
Originally a fifth-round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals out of Oregon State University in the 2011 MLB draft, Gaviglio made his major league debut with Seattle on May 11, 2017, when he threw two innings of relief against Toronto.
