The problem with news

The problem with “news” is that it only gets attention (and therefore ink) if it arouses fear or anger.

We read that a pedestrian was killed by a self-driving car, and are led to believe that self-driving cars are dangerous. But more than 16 pedestrians, three bicyclists and 110 passengers are killed every day by cars driven by people.

For some reason we acclimate to these horrors, and yet still respond emotionally to “bad news.” The truth is, traffic deaths would decrease by orders of magnitude if vehicles were self-driving.
