Fredrickson leads Grizzlies to season-opening romp

Steen Fredrickson started his senior season with a bang as the Ashland High baseball team pummeled North Valley 12-3 in nonconference action Tuesday in Grants Pass.

Fredrickson went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and two RBIs and was just as solid on the mound, striking out five batters in three innings of relief.

Ashland catcher Jett Hamik added a hit, two walks and an RBI and TarQuin Daley drove in Ashland’s first run of the game, as the Grizzlies used a nine-hit attack to trounce the Class 4A Knights.

“There were some first-day jitters and some nervous energy,” Ashland first-year coach Mike Kenask said. “I thought after first inning we really calmed down and played our style of baseball, made contact, made plays, and we stole a good amount of bases, too. We ran a lot.”

Sophomore Jesse Carroll got the start for the Grizzlies and wound up pitching the first three innings, striking out two and walking four. Fredrickson took over in the fourth and shut down the Knights (0-2) over the next three innings. Kyle Milgram struck out the side in the seventh to clinch the win.

“The older guys [Fredrickson and Milgram] were kind of just mowing people down,” Kenask said.

McKenna Read had two hits and Georgia Williams struck out eight batters in five innings but some sloppy defense cost Ashland its season opener on Tuesday.

The North Valley Knights were out-hit but took advantage of four Ashland errors to score seven unearned runs en route to an 8-3 nonconference victory over the Grizzlies, Tuesday at North Mountain Park.

Williams gave up one earned run on four hits and Grace Lenthe struck out three in two innings of relief, but the Grizzlies couldn’t overcome a rough day in the field.

Read was the only Grizzly with more than one hit, but Hannah Teixiera and Erica Heckerman each scored a run and Williams was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Lenthe also drove in a run for Ashland. Williams, Lenthe and Read each hit a double.

Abi Kite was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI to lead the Knights (2-0). North Valley pitcher Taryn King held Ashland to three earned runs on five hits while striking out eight in a complete-game effort.
