Grizz baseball team caps Arizona trip with another win

Ashland capped its Arizona trip with another impressive victory Thursday, scoring four runs in the first and four more in the fifth en route to an 8-6 victory over Evergreen (Colo.) at Phoenix, Ariz.

The win improved the Grizzlies to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Greenway Festival.

Ashland leadoff hitter Caleb Bell had two hits, drove in a run and scored another while catcher Jett Hamik added two RBIs and scored twice.

Jesse Carroll ripped an run-scoring single and Nick Sanderson a sacrifice fly in the first to help the Grizzlies take control early. Jose Perez tacked on a two-run single in the fifth.

Ashland plays its first-ever Midwestern League baseball game Tuesday against Springfield. The first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at North Mountain Park.

College Basketball

The Southern Oregon men's basketball team finished No. 9 and the SOU women No. 13 in the NAIA Division II postseason polls, released Wednesday.

The SOU men, who won two games in Point Lookout, Mo., to advance to the national quarterfinals for the second time in program history, jumped 12 spots from the previous poll. The SOU women fell three spots after advancing to the Sweet 16.

The Cascade Conference was well represented in the final men's poll — College of Idaho finished No. 6, Concordia No. 12 and Warner Pacific No. 15.

The strong postseason runs by SOU's basketball teams helped SOU remain in first place out of 252 schools in the NAIA Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings, which were updated Thursday.

The Directors' Cup, developed as a joint effort between NACDA and USA Today, awards points based on each school's finish in up to 12 sports.

Southern Oregon has a combined 589 points. Second-place Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) has 567.5, and third-place Oklahoma Baptist 553.5.

ASHLAND 8, EVERGREEN 5: At Phoenix, Ariz., Ashland scored four runs each in the first and fifth innings to defeat the Colorado team in the Greenway Festival.

The Grizzlies (5-1) finished the festival with a 2-1 record.

Caleb Bell had two hits, an RBI and a run for Ashland, and Jet Hamik had two RBIs and two runs.

Jesse Carroll had a run scoring single in the first, and Nick Sanderson had a sacrifice fly in the first and scored a run in the fifth. Jose Perez’s two-run single was the big hit in the fifth.
