Ashland girls fall to Hood River in first-round shootout

Hood River Valley connected on four penalty kicks to edge Ashland in a PK shootout for a 1-0 win in the first round of the OSAA Class 5A girls soccer state tournament Wednesday in Hood River.

The host Eagles (9-4-2) bounced Ashland 4-3 in the shootout to advance to the 5A quarterfinals, where they’ll face top-ranked Summit on Saturday.

“We had a couple really good chances and their keeper just had some high-quality saves,” Ashland coach Eric Wolff said.

After 100 minutes of scoreless action — 80 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime — Ashland (9-2-4) goalkeeper Berkeley Skuratowicz blocked Hood River Valley’s first and third penalty kicks, but the Eagles’ keeper denied Ashland on its second and fifth PKs and the hosts won in the sudden-death sixth round.

The win was Hood River Valley’s sixth win in its last seven games and extended its unbeaten streak to seven matches.

Ashland nearly broke the scoreless tie with two minutes left in regulation, but Hailee Hayes was taken down from behind in the box in a controversial no-call. It was one of several near misses for the Grizzlies, Wolff said.

“It was under the lights and you could see the shadow of the ball barely missing the post a few times,” hesaid. “We were so close on a number of opportunities. … Considering they had to sit on a bus for almost eight hours they played exceptionally well.”

Mya Elder-Hammond, Ia Balbuena and Calysta Susu-Mago each connected on their PKs for Ashland which suffered its first loss since Oct. 15.

The game was the last prep match for seven Grizzly seniors.

College Wrestling

Southern Oregon University’s first-ever women’s wrestling team made its unofficial debut as the Black squad edged the Red squad 55-52 in the Red & Black Intrasquad, Wednesday at Riehm Arena.

The annual scrimmage included 22 men’s and five women’s bouts and was clinched for the Black team when Jasmine Ivey narrowly avoided a fall against the Red’s Tenaya Raives in the last match of the day. Raives needed a pin to clinch the victory for her team, but settled for a 4-4 decision victory.
