Sanderson leads Grizzlies to season-opening baseball win

Nick Sanderson went 2-for-3 at the plate and pitched four scoreless innings to lead the Ashland High baseball team to a 10-0, season-opening victory over North Valley on Wednesday at North Mountain Park.

The junior slugger limited the Knights to four hits and struck out seven before giving way to Chris Buckley.

“Nick Sanderson just did an amazing job,” Ashland coach Charlie Hall said. “He threw a high strike percentage and the kids played great defense behind him.”

Also for Ashland, leadoff hitter Caleb Bell went 2-for-3, and Jett Hamik and Peyton Fuller each had a double.

The Grizzlies scored four runs on five hits in the first highlighted by Hamik’s RBI double to center. Sanderson added a run-scoring double of his own in the second to make it 5-0, and Bell’s single up the middle in the fifth drove in the 10th run to end the game early by the 10-run mercy rule.

North Valley loaded the bases with one out in the fourth, but the Grizzlies turned a 4-6-3 double play to keep the shutout going.

“It was a pretty good start,” Hall said, “and we had a great crowd, great support from the community.”
