Edwards, Sanderson lead Grizz past Highlanders
Kellar Edwards drove in four runs on three hits and Nick Sanderson tossed a six-inning gem as the Ashland High baseball team beat North Eugene 7-1 in the first game of a three-game Midwestern League series Tuesday at Swede Johnson Stadium.
Edwards, who bats second in Ashland’s lineup, was 3-for-3, including a bases-clearing double that highlighted a five-run second-inning for the Grizzlies (15-6, 10-6 MWL) which broke the game open.
Sanderson made sure it held up by holding the Highlanders scoreless on two hits through the first five innings. He finished with seven strikeouts and two walks, giving up one run on three hits to pick up the victory.
Sanderson also had two hits while Noah Faulkner delivered a solo home run to spark the second-inning rally, which struck after the Highlanders (8-11, 4-9) opened the inning by getting two quick outs.
North Eugene starting pitcher John Averill surrendered five runs, two earned, on five hits in four innings and took the loss.
North Eugene’s Kordel Pruett was 2-for-3.
The two teams meet again Saturday in Ashland. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. at North Mountain Park.
