AHS boys fare well in first day of state tennis tourney
Ashland High's top-seeded boys doubles team of Rox Rogers and Kai Weston cruised to a first-round win and Mischa Kirby was just as dominant in the singles bracket in the first day of the OSAA Class 5A state boys tennis tournament Thursday at the Portland Tennis Center.
The Ashland girls' lone representative, the doubles tandem of Lilli Patton and Hanna Barchet, lost in the first round and will try to work its way through the eight-team consolation bracket starting today.
Rogers and Weston, who are undefeated following a dominant run through the Midwestern League district tournament, beat Matt Mazon and Nguyen Le of Parkrose, 6-0, 6-0, to advance to the state quarterfinals. They will face Aaron Banquer-Glenn and Nicolas Campbell of Bend today.
Kirby, seeded No. 4, ousted Luigi Massa of Parkrose, 6-0, 6-0, to advance to the singles quarterfinals, where he will face Thomas Gniadecki of Dallas today. If Kirby wins that, he'll likely face top-seeded Nathan Hampton of Churchill in the semifinals this afternoon.
Patton and Barchet lost to Alyson McGaughey and Makenna Wells of Sandy, 6-2, 6-2, and will take on Sonja Kinney and Sabryna Adrianson in the first round of the consolation bracket today.
The tournament wraps up Saturday at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton.
Ashland High will host Lebanon in a Class 5A state play-in game today at North Mountain Park. The first pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 5 p.m.
Lebanon (8-18), which finished sixth in the Mid-Willamette Conference, enters the postseason on a four-game winning streak.
Ashland (17-8) placed third in the Midwestern League.
The winner advances to the 16-team state tournament, which begins Wednesday.
