Ashland baseball falls to Grants Pass in season opener

GRANTS PASS — It was a tough 2018 season opener for the young Ashland High School baseball team on Wednesday afternoon, as the Grizzlies fell to Grants Pass 11-1 in five innings.

The Grizzlies (0-1 overall) trailed 8-0 after the first two innings before scoring their lone run of the game in the top of the third on an RBI double by Eli Westrick.

Ashland was limited to two hits by Grants Pass starting pitcher Cade King, who struck out seven in his five-inning complete game.

Ashland faces North Medford at 4:30 p.m. this afternoon.

Ashland 8, St. Mary’s 0: The Grizzlies opened their 2018 season with a clean sweep of the Crusaders at Hunter Park.

Between Ashland’s four singles players — Alyssa Retiz, Lauren Croyle, Isabella HozDevila and Bridget Burr — they lost a total of three games.

In total, the Grizzlies lost just one set in the eight matches on the day.

Ashland returns to the court on Friday against Klamath Union.
