Marist sweeps Ashland in MWL clash
EUGENE — Marist reliever Hunter Bloom squelched an Ashland rally in the opener and Marist used 12 hits to finish the first game in six innings as the Spartans took two games from Ashland to wrap up a sweep in the three-game Midwestern League series Saturday at Marist High.
The visiting Grizzlies trimmed what was an 8-1 deficit to 8-6 on Evan McLennan’s two-run double with two outs in the top of the seventh of Game 1, but Bloom induced a ground out by Ashland slugger Nick Buccino to end the game.
Buccino went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored an an RBI, Dane Reynolds 3-for-4 with two runs and Isaac Evans hit a two-run home run in the sixth to give the Grizzlies (0-5, 0-3 MWL) new life.
For Marist (3-1, 3-0), Sonny Hiday went 4-for-4 with a double and two RBIs and Ryan Kirk 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
In the second game, the Spartans scored six runs on four hits and two errors in the third inning to break open the game, then added four runs on five hits in the fourth.
Dylan Parsons, Cooper Greene and JJ Anderson had two hits apiece for the Spartans. Anderson drove in four, two on a bases-loaded single in the fourth.
Ashland leadoff hitter Eli Westrick went 1-for-2 with a single to start the game. He later scored on a single by Evans to give Ashland the early lead.
Bloom entered Game 2 in the third and held the Grizzlies to one unearned run on one hit over the next three innings.

CRUSADER RELAYS: At Ashland, freshman Sophia Dobry won the 1-mile run and was runner-up in the 2-kilometer steeplechase and St. Mary’s prevailed in three of the six relays to capture the girls team title in the 20th annual Crusader Relays, Friday at Raider Stadium.
The Crusaders earned 79 points to edge second-place Yreka (76) and third-place Lakeview (69). Hidden Valley won the boys team title with 111.5 points, while second-place Cascade Christian, led by two-event winner Zach Booker, finished with 96 points.
Dobry won the 1-mile in 5 minutes, 53.74 seconds, besting runner-up McKenzie Carrier of Oak Hill (5:54.01). Also for the St. Mary’s girls, Emma Bennion won the steeplechase, Maddie Wheelock placed second in the high jump (5 feet), Katie Rietmann placed fourth in the shot put (33-5) and the discus (95-9) and Lila Reed placed second in the triple jump (24-9). Cascade Christian’s Abbey Alexander won the discus (110-4), beating out second-place teammate Sarah Johnston (104-6), Kara Ash was runner-up in the long jump (14-10) and Sarah Johnston was second in the shot put (35-9.5).
Booker won both the long jump (19-3) and the triple jump (40-8), while teammates Rylee Dexter won the high jump (6-2) and Collin Marshall the discus (133-1).
