Ashland’s Rogers advances to district semis
EUGENE — Rox Rogers dominated his second round and quarterfinal opponents and Ashland’s top doubles team of Nur Shelton and Braden Rogers did the same as all three players advanced to the semifinals of the Class 5A District 3 boys tennis championships on Saturday to clinch berths in the 5A state tournament at the Eugene Swim and Tennis Club.
The six-team tournament concludes next Saturday at the same site.
After receiving a first-round bye, Rogers, the No. 1 seed in the 30-player singles tournament, trounced Ethan Cross of Marist, 6-0, 6-0, in the second round then beat his quarterfinal opponent, 6-0, 6-1.
The wins advanced Rogers, who fell in the 5A state singles championship match last season, to the district semis, where he will face Jackson Whittaker of Marist for a spot in the championship match.
Shelton and Braden Rogers were nearly as dominant. They beat their first-round opponent, 6-4, 6-1, then routed Donovan Humphrey and Connor Speers of Marist, 6-1, 6-2. Shelton and Rogers will face Spencer Franssen and Andrew Hyslop of Marist in the district semis.
