Ashland trio sweeps Day 1 matchups at state tennis tournament

PORTLAND — Day 1 at the OSAA Class 5A Boys Tennis State Championship was a clean sweep for Ashland High School’s three-man contingent.

Top-seeded Rox Rogers and the Grizzlies’ third-seeded doubles team of senior Nur Shelton and freshman Braden Rogers both claimed straight-set victories to advance to the quarterfinals of the state tournament at the Portland Tennis Center on Thursday.

“It went great,” Ashland head coach Ari Zaslow said. “Both singles and doubles played really well and it was a good first day.”

Rox Rogers, who was the 5A singles runner-up as a junior last season, opened up what could very well be a title-winning weekend with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Wilsonville junior Jack Roche.

In the first of what could be the first of two matches today, the elder Rogers will face Hood River Valley freshman Vaughn Reardon, who won his opening match 6-4, 6-3.

“He did well. He seemed calm and ready to compete and didn’t seem nervous at all,” Zaslow said of Rogers. ”He’s been here before and knows how to play solid in the first couple of rounds. He had a good feel for the surface and the court. He was attacking a lot and hitting balls early, coming to the net. It was pretty quick and he played pretty well.”

Just like his older brother, Braden Rogers and Shelton won their opening-round match in convincing fashion over South Albany’s Ozzy Ramirez and Austin Mendoza by a score of 6-0, 6-3.

The Rogers-Shelton tandem will face one of four Summit High doubles teams that made it to the quarterfinals, Tomas Todd and Andrew Kropp.

“(Rogers and Shelton) played really well. Lots of first serves and they were poaching a lot and took over the middle of the court,” Zaslow said. “Summit is really deep and they’re playing the three or four team. They’re tough and had nine kids qualify for singles or doubles — and they all won.”
