Grizzlies victorious in first game since 2016

The Ashland High softball team didn’t wait long to get back in the win column in its return to the varsity level.

Junior pitcher Ruby Adams struck out 11 and allowed only one earned run through six innings to help Ashland earn its first varsity triumph, 11-8 over Mount Shasta (Calif.) on Tuesday afternoon, since 2016 after playing a junior varsity schedule the past two years.

Adams allowed only three hits with one walk for the Grizzlies (1-0), who used a six-run fourth inning to build a 10-5 cushion. Freshman Gabby Heiken earned the save by striking out three and walking one in a scoreless seventh inning.

Heiken also paced Ashland at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three runs and one RBI. Adams, Emma Vandersnick and Tatum Pantle secured the only other hits for the Grizzlies.

After just one nonleague game, Ashland opens up Midwestern League play this Saturday when it travels to Eagle Point for a doubleheader that starts at 1 p.m.
