PREP ROUNDUP: Ashland baseball splits twin bill vs. Churchill
MEDFORD — Ashland rallied with five runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a 5-4 Midwestern League win in the opener Saturday afternoon, but Churchill answered with two runs in the top of the seventh to win Game 2 3-1 at U.S. Cellular Community Park.
Evan McLennan supplied a two-run single to spark Ashland (9-8, 5-5 MWL) and was followed by an RBI single from Rowan Amann, RBI double by Nate Carter and walk-off single by Traber Burns to cap its unlikely rally.
Eli Westrick struck out six and allowed six hits to win Game 1.
Amann was 2-for-3 and drove in Westrick for the lone run against Churchill (14-3, 7-3) in Game 2.

ASHLAND 8-0, CHURCHILL 7-16: At Ashland, with host Ashland trailing by five runs heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, Kallin Hakes capped the Grizzlies’ six-run rally with a walk-off three-run double to capture the first game of a Midwestern League doubleheader split against Churchill.
The Lancers (11-7, 6-4 MWL) led 7-2 but the Grizzlies (4-12, 2-8) began the frame by loading the bases after a walk, a Churchill error and a dropped third strike.
Alia Gorringe’s RBI single cut the deficit to 7-3 and, with two outs, Gabby Heiken came up with a two-run double before Hakes followed with a bases-clearing double that glanced off the center fielder’s glove.
Gorringe finished 3-for-4 with a pair of triples, three RBIs and a run scored for Ashland, and Heiken went 2-for-4 with a double.
In Game 2, Churchill scored 12 runs over the first two innings and the contest was called in the fifth by virtue of the 10-run mercy rule.
