Grizzlies nip Panthers again

The Ashland High baseball team took advantage of a pair of South Medford errors during a fourth-inning surge where the Grizzlies chalked up six runs and escaped a seventh-inning comeback attempt for a 6-5 victory at North Mountain Park on Thursday evening.

With one out in the top of the seventh and South Medford baserunners on second and third, Grizzlies reliever Evan McLennan forced a double play to help Ashland seal the win.

After the Panthers (10-10 overall) had taken a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth, the Grizzlies (13-8) loaded the bases, and with one out Cruz Drieling used a sacrifice fly to score Bailey Hanks before Eli Westrick’s RBI single cut the South Medford advantage to 3-2.

Following the Panthers’ first error, Nick Buccino came up with an RBI single to knot the score at 3-all before an error resulted in three more runs coming home to help the Grizzlies go up 6-3.

South Medford tallied two runs in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 6-5.

Buccino finished 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI while Isaac Evans came away 2-for-2 and crossed home plate once for Ashland, which has two wins over South this season.

Giovanni Bottero finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run while Steven Ledendecker finished 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored for the Panthers.
