GIRLS TENNIS: Grizzlies shine on first day of MWL meet
NORTH BEND — Ashland High singles players Alyssa Retiz and Sascha Wells were impressive in qualifying for a spot in the 5A state tournament during the first day of the two-day Midwestern League district championships on Friday afternoon at North Bend High.
The top-seeded Reitz advanced into today’s semifinals with victories over Hailey Engstrom of Churchill (6-0, 6-0) and Jerusalem Morris of Willamette (6-2, 6-0). Wells reached the semis by beating Genasea Reigard of North Bend (6-0, 6-0) and Anna Hiatt of Churchill (6-0, 6-0).
In doubles, the Ashland team of Zoe Zapf and Jessica Hitchcock reached the semifinals with a pair of victories to grab a state tournament berth.
The Ashland team secured a first-round win over Olivia Knutson and Sydney Wilson of North Bend (6-2, 6-0) and cruised past Peyton Brooks and Ellis Calvert of Willamette (6-1, 6-0) in the second round.
Advancing to the semifinals at district earns a state tournament spot.
Ashland’s Lauren Croyle won a first-round match against Melissa DeLeon of Thurston (6-1, 6-1) but lost a tough three-setter in the second round 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 to Nicole Hampton of Churchill.
Bridget Burr gave the Grizzlies a fourth singles victory in the first round — defeating Alia Salden of North Eugene (6-1, 6-1) before losing to Youha Tanaka of Churchill (6-0, 6-0).
Ashland also got a first-round doubles victory from Lyndsey Annen and Jackie Moran, then the Grizzlies pair lost to Jocelyn Dowdy and Grace Martin of Thurston (6-2, 6-1).
The Midwestern League championships conclude today.
