Grizzlies split regular-season finale vs. North Bend
NORTH BEND— Ashland used two big innings — including a five-run first — to put Game 1 out of reach and claim an 11-2 win, but North Bend repaid the favor in the nightcap to claim a 7-6 victory as the Midwestern League doubleheader was split in the regular season finale for both squads on Thursday afternoon.
The Grizzlies (16-9, 10-6 MWL), who landed third place in the Midwestern League, capitalized on four walks and a wild pitch by Bulldogs starting pitcher Jake Simmons in the first inning to gain the early advantage before rolling up six more runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by Nate Carter’s two-run single.
Ashland starter Eli Westrick limited the damage to two runs despite North Bend (11-13, 7-9) coming up with four hits and four walks during his stead. Reliever Dane Reynolds allowed three hits over the final 2 1/3 to pick up the win.
Carter scored twice, as did Rowan Amann and Nick Buccino.
In Game 2, Ashland rallied to tie the game 6-all by scoring four runs in the top of the seventh but North Bend’s Corbin White cajoled a bases loaded walk to score the winning run in the bottom of the frame.
The Grizzlies needed the rally after North Bend had tallied six runs in the third inning where it took a 6-2 lead.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, Carter’s walk was followed by Myles Ranswieler’s single which set up a three straight-run scoring hits by Issac Evans, Cruz Drieling and Dillon Anway. Evans also scored on a wild pitch to knot the score 6-all.
