Buyer of Mark plans to buy resort at lake
Douglass Neuman, the Ashland developer who bought the Mark Antony Hotel, is the new owner of Lake of the Woods Resort in the Cascades.
Neuman was preparing today to make final his purchase from Bruce and Vicki Barnard, who have owned it about six years and plan to retire.
The purchase price was not disclosed. The Klamath County assessor listed the value of the buildings at $315,240 and fixtures at $46,606. The site itself is owned by the Forest Service.
Lake of the Woods is in the Winema National Forest near Mount McLoughlin, off Highway 140, the route between White City and Klamath Falls. Though it is in Klamath County, it draws many visitors from Jackson County.
Neuman said Thursday he still is drawing up his plans for the resort. But he wants to add cabins, fix up the marina and landscaping, and improve the campground and recreational-vehicle park.
His purchase of Lake of the Woods Resort comes on top of his acquisition of the landmark Mark Antony, which he hopes to renovate as a hotel.
He secured the hotel with an offer of $1.6 million in cash at a federal bankruptcy auction July 13. Renovation could take a year or more.
His company, Mountain Park Development, also has been involved in several housing developments in Ashland and Jacksonville, most recently a 25-lot hillside subdivision on Strawberry Lane, legal findings for which won Ashland City Council approval last week.
He also is co-owner of the Ashland Racquet and Fitness Center, where he is contemplating additional work.
How does Neuman plan to keep up with all his properties?
I have a good team of people working with me, he said.
