CENTRAL POINT -- Erickson Air-Crane has secured a contract from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's aero bureau to provide the inspection and refurbishment of three SH-3H Sea King helicopters, the company announced.

The helicopters were formerly operated by the U.S. Navy and Erickson will convert them for use by the sheriff's department for tactical deployment, air ambulance service and search-and-rescue operations.

The contract begins early this month and Erickson beat out seven other companies for it, including Sikorsky Aircraft -- the helicopters' original manufacturer.

The helicopters will be transported to Central Point for the work to be done.
