Internet provider InfoStructure sold to Los Angeles firm

Internet Ventures Inc. of Los Angeles has acquired InfoStructure, the Rogue Valley's first Internet service provider.

George Stephan, general manager of InfoStructure, said the sale closed Dec. 24. InfoStructure, founded in 1994 and based in Ashland, has about 3,000 subscribers.

Internet Ventures Inc. (IVI) also acquired Medford Net in September, he said. It has about a dozen systems from Spokane, Wash., to Ventura, Calif.

Their intent is to build a network of providers in markets of 500,000 people and less, Stephan said. Their technical expertise is in cable and wireless modems. They are contracting with cable and wireless providers for channels to use to download from the Internet through what they call `Perkinet.'

InfoStructure will retain its name and staff of 10, Stephan said.

The general philosophy of IVI is to let the ISPs (Internet service providers) operate autonomously; their link is Perkinet technology, he explained.

Internet Ventures is a relatively new firm with executives drawn from various providers and the cable industry, Stephan said. The president, Paul Janke, used to be in charge of West Coast marketing for Prodigy.
