Sprint plans job fair to fill openings

With its Medford call center a month from opening, Sprint Corp.'s search for employees is in high gear.

The company will hold a career fair today and Saturday in Padgham Pavilion at the Jackson County Expo. The event is from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

Sprint plans to open its 250-seat call center in the former Ernst building at the South Gateway Shopping Center on May 30. Workers there will receive and make calls, taking orders for service and doing telemarketing.

The company is seeking sales and service representatives. The starting salary is $8 an hour plus an incentive of $540 a month when sales quotas are met.

Sprint has already hired some employees, and 36 of them have begun the six-week training course, according to Sprint spokesman Jim Nelson. The company plans to hire employees in blocks of 30 to 40 for the call center as it ramps up operations. The call center will operate 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

By the end of the year, Sprint expects to have 350 to 400 employees -- the equivalent of 250 full-time jobs. Nelson says the company is hoping to draw candidates for the current openings as well as the positions it will add as the year progresses.
