Mick's prepares to open on Barnett

Rogue Valley diners will soon be able to meet at Mick's again without leaving Medford.

Mick's Alehouse and Restaurant, a fixture in the Rogue Valley Mall for a decade, will open later this month on Barnett Road.

The restaurant has leased the building at 1841 Barnett Road last occupied by Wailea Ranch, a restaurant that closed earlier this year. Before Wailea Ranch, the location was home to Tutto Bene, Streams and the Sandpiper.

Mick's closed in the mall at the end of 1998 and owner Mick Walkup opened Mick's on The Rogue in Shady Cove last year. That restaurant will continue to operate as well.

Remodeling has begun on Mick's new location, which is expected to open in mid-June, according to Brenda Rowbotham. Rowbotham, Walkup's daughter, will manage the restaurant.

We're trying to get back some of that mall crowd we had, she says. I think it's going to be a good location. I live at this end of town and there's nothing unless you go downtown.

The new Mick's will feature a similar menu to the former mall location. It will be open for lunch and dinner from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week.

Rowbotham says Mick's was looking at the Barnett Road location even before the old Mick's left the mall. However, before it was ready to make the move, another well-known restaurateur, Beasy Macmillan, leased the space.

McMillan operated Tutto Bene and Wailea Ranch at the spot. Tutto Bene was open for about a year before McMillan converted it to Wailea Ranch last June. It closed this spring.

McMillan could not be reached for comment.

The reopening of Mick's under Rowbotham's management will create a sibling rivalry in the Medford restaurant business. Her brother, Greg Walkup, manages 4 Seasons restaurant. 4 Seasons opened in March at the mall — in the same spot Mick's left.
