Seminar offers tips to retailers

ASHLAND — A retail consultant will come to Ashland next week to give local independent businesses some tips on thriving in a world dominated by malls and superstores.

Business owners are invited to hear nationally known consultant Jon Schallert present his business improvement seminar, Creating World Class Retailers, from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Aug. — at Carpenter Hall, 15 S. Pioneer St.

The free seminar is sponsored by the Ashland Community Development Department, the Ashland Chamber of Commerce and the City of Central Point.

Schallert's retail consulting firm, Schallert and Associates, Inc., is based in Sorrento, Fla. The firm conducts business owner seminars nationwide and offers individual on-site evaluations to help retailers improve the profitability and productivity of their stores.

Most retail businesses that fail today would not have to close if they had adapted to easily recognizable marketplace changes and focused on becoming consumer destinations, Schallert says. It's an oversimplification to say that all small Mom-and-Pop businesses are doomed because of superstores like Wal-Mart or because of the proliferation of malls throughout the country.

Schallert's seminar teaches independent retailers how to turn their businesses into consumer destinations that attract customers from miles away.

As part of his visit to the Rogue Valley, Schallert will conduct on-site business-improvement evaluations at seven local businesses. The 45-minute consultations cost $25; call the Ashland chamber at 482-3486 for reservations.
