Owner closes doors of Grants Pass theater

GRANTS PASS

-- After 61 years of continuous operation, the Rogue Theater has been closed and will likely stay shut down for a while.

Right now the theater is closed, said business owner John Schweiger on Monday. And it is not our intention to reopen it as a first-run movie theater.

Schweiger owns Coming Attractions of Ashland, which bought the Rogue Theater business and lease in October from Regal Cinemas, the largest theater chain in the nation.

Schweiger operates 82 screens, making him the largest independent movie theater operator in the Pacific Northwest.

He has 10 other screens in Grants Pass, six at the Movies 6 and four at SouthGate, both relatively new theater complexes.

Schweiger said he'll consider various plans for the theater within the next two weeks.
