Cost is a factor in planting road trees

Since you asked

I've noticed that the new section of road near the mall, Highway 238 to Jacksonville, does not have trees planted in the center divider ' why not?

' Diana G., Medford

Well, Diana, we asked John Vial, district manager for Oregon Department of Transportation, and he said the state has been cutting costs by cutting landscaping these days.

Planting trees gets into all kinds of issues of watering, pruning, raking, and pulling leaves out of storm drains. There are safety issues with trees sometimes, too, because they can block a driver's line of sight, he said.

The landscaping along Highway 238, said Vial, is all being done by the city of Medford.
