Rules limit riding in truck beds
Since you asked
What's the deal? Are passengers legally allowed to ride in the back of pickup trucks?

Yes, provided that all other seats and seat belts are being used, said Medford police Sgt. Bob Sergi. Passengers in the bed of the truck must stay seated at all times and must not ride on any portion of the vehicle not intended for transport.
Even at low speeds, odds are that you will be injured in an accident if you are a passenger in the bed of a pickup, Sergi said. Without a seat belt, you would most likely be thrown around or ejected, he added.
