Kids may have set school fire, police say

Investigators believe kids playing with fireworks Saturday night at Abraham Lincoln School may be the ones behind an arson fire that destroyed a school play structure, authorities said.

Whoever set the 8:55 p.m. fire at 3101 McLoughlin Drive ignited the play structure intentionally and possibly with fireworks or fuse paper, police said.

Neighbors reportedly saw kids playing at the school and heard fireworks less than an hour before the fire was discovered, Medford police Lt. Mike Moran said.

Police had not identified the kids as of Monday night, but they are a focal point of the investigation, Moran said.

We definitely want to talk to them, Moran said. If these guys didn't do it, they saw who was there.

Detectives plan to post fliers at the school seeking information about the kids and the fireworks found at the scene, Moran said.

The play structure was bought and built by the school's Parent Teacher Organization four years ago, Moran said. It will cost about &

36;1,000 to replace, he said.

Whoever started the fire first placed some cardboard and other burnable materials in the play structure's tube before igniting it, Moran said.

This was definitely not an accidental fire, he said.

The case remained under investigation.
