'Wind' won 8 Oscars; but not for 'Best Baby'

Since You Asked

I recently saw the great old movie Gone With the Wind on TV, and they said it won seven Oscars. Which ones, and who were the winners?

What about former Jackson County Commissioner Ric Holt, who played Melanie's baby?

' William H., Medford

What, you mean did Ric Holt get an Oscar? They weren't giving an award for Best Baby that year, William.

The picture won eight competitive Oscars and two special citations.

Winning were Vivien Leigh (best actress), David O. Selznick's picture itself (best picture), Hattie McDaniel (best supporting actress), Victor Fleming (direction), Sidney Howard (screenplay), Lyle R. Wheeler (art direction), Ernest Haller and Ray Rennahan(cinematography) and Hal C. Kern and James E. Newcom (film editing).

Not bad for a Southern soap opera up against Goodbye Mr. Chips, Stagecoach, Dark Victory, Ninotchka, Of Mice and Men, Wuthering Heights, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and The Wizard of Oz.

Hollywood doesn't make years like that anymore.
