Motor home fire slows I-5 traffic

Flames engulfed a motor home early Friday night on Interstate 5 north of Gold Hill.

At about 6 p.m., crews from the Rogue River fire department traveled south on I-5 to milepost 43 to battle the fire. When they arrived, the motor home was in the southbound lanes, already fully involved, said Capt. Mark Thompson.

At one point, a propane tank on the vehicle exploded, Thompson said. Investigators believe the fire started in the motor home's engine compartment.

An Oregon State Police spokesman said officials were able to keep open one lane of the freeway until the fire was extinguished.

Police had difficulty communicating with the driver of the motor home because he is deaf, Thompson said. The driver, whose name was not available, was not injured in the fire.
