I know the Spiegelberg Stadium at South Medford High School is named after longtime Tornado coach Fred Spiegelberg, but who are the press box and track named after?
' L. Meeds, Medford
Former Medford track coach Bob Newland is the namesake for the track. Newland was coach from 1947 to 1957.
Former Medford schools Superintendent Steve Wisely named the track after receiving a &
36;50,000 donation from Newland's friend, Bill Bowerman, for an all-weather track. One of the conditions of the donation was that the track be named for Newland. Bowerman was a former Medford athletic director who went on to become a track coach for the University of Oregon and the Olympics and co-founded Nike.
Newland left Medford in 1957 to become vice principal at North Eugene High School. He died of cancer in 1995 at age 67.
— Tom McLeod and Don Hanlin, former radio broadcasters, are the namesakes for the press box.
Between the 1950s and 1980s, the pair broadcast high school athletic games in Medford and traveled with Medford athletic teams to air away games, Wisely said.
