Local wineries win at Newport festival

Local wineries and grapes had a good showing in the 2014 Newport Seafood & Wine Festival commercial wine competition.

Seven gold medals were doled out for wines with ties to Jackson and Josephine county wineries and vineyards. Valley View Winery of Ruch collected golds for its 2012 Sauvignon Blanc and 2011 Tempranillo.

Flying Dutchman Winery of Otter Rock won Best of Show honors for its 2006 Syrah.

There were 169 entries with a total of 32 gold medals, 46 silver medals and 40 bonze medals awarded. A list of local winners follows:

GOLD: Chateau Lorane, 2011 pinotage, Rogue Valley; Crater Lake Cellars, 2012 syrah, Rogue Valley; Folin Cellars, 2009 syrah, Rogue Valley; Soloro Vineyard, 2008 grenache, Applegate Valley; Troon Vineyard, 2011 red malbec, Applegate Valley; Valley View Winery: 2012 sauvignon blanc and 2011 tempranillo, Rogue Valley.

SILVER: Crater Lake Cellars: 2012 cabernet sauvignon and 2012 merlot, Rogue Valley; J. Scott Cellars, 2012 grenache and 2011 petite sirah, Rogue Valley; Merrill Cellars, 2011 viognier, Oregon; Slagle Creek Vineyards, 2009 Estate Reserve Red (48% cabernet sauvignon, 32% merlot, 12%, syrah, 8% tempranillo), Southern Oregon; Soloro Vineyard, 2012 Reserve viognier, Applegate Valley; Tesoaria Vineyard & Winery, 2013 viognier, Southern Oregon; Troon Vineyard, 2011 cabernet franc reserve, Applegate Valley.

BRONZE: Ancient Cellars, 2009 cabernet sauvignon, Rogue Valley; Flying Dutchman Winery, 2008 cabernet franc (Quail Run Vineyard) and 2008 merlot (Reserve & Quail Run Vineyard), Rogue Valley; Folin Cellars, 2010 Red Blend (40% syrah, 40% mourvedre, 20% grenache) and petite sirah, Rogue Valley; LaBrasseur Winery, 2012 riesling and 2011 syrah, Rogue Valley; Merrill Cellars, 2008 syrah, Rogue Valley; Slagle Creek Vineyards, 2011 syrah dessert wine, Applegate Valley; Troon Vineyard, 2011 Red Estate zinfandel, Applegate Valley.

The festival will be Feb. 20-23 in Newport.
