Insurance industry veteran 

Charles G. Smith has joined Ashland Insurance. Smith has 20 years of experience in commercial and personal insurance, including risk management and marketing achievements for large and small businesses. He also developed statewide specialty programs for building contractors and physicians’ medical malpractice insurance coverage.

U.S. Bank has named

Shelley Brunelle branch manager at its Central Point office, 139 East Pine St.

Brunelle brings more than 18 years of experience in the financial services industry, most recently with Key Bank.

Don Abbott has been hired by the City of Grants Pass as its business advocate. Abbott has a wide-ranging background in private business, academia and business development circles.

Most recently Abbott has operated the Heeney Marina at Green Mountain Reservoir in Colorado, which he acquired in November 2008. Before that he helped small and medium-size companies develop lean manufacturing practices while under contract with the Colorado Association for Manufacturing and Technology. Prior to that, Abbott was executive director for the Loveland Center for Business Development from 2006-2008.

Abbott was affiliated with Aims Community College in Greeley, Colo., from 1988 through 2006. During that period he served a variety of roles: classroom instructor, marketing and sales director, Small Business Development Center director and associate academic dean.

From 1998 to 2000 Abbott, was president of Landmark Components Co., doubling the manufacturing company's revenue. He entered business for himself in Loveland, Colo., in 1996, growing Pet Heating Products from $126,000 in sales to $3.5 million in six years.

After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Economics from Eastern Oregon University in 1982, Abbott worked for electronics firm Little & Associates in Sunnyvale, Calif.
