Medford pharmacy sees steady growth

Angie Meeker runs a compounding pharmacy operation, serving clients whose medications aren't easily taken in normal ways.

"If they have trouble swallowing pills, I can make their medicine into a liquid," said Meeker, the owner of Wellness Pharmacy. "It's a fairly specialized field."

Meeker started off in the Rogue Valley Medical Arts Building back in 1999. As business picked up, she packed up and moved to larger quarters, first on Ellendale Avenue, then to the Crater Lake East office complex just southeast of the Crater Lake Avenue and East McAndrews Road intersection. Having once more outgrown its space, Wellness Pharmacy and its 10 pharmacists, technicians and clerks will move into their own building at 522 Crater Lake Ave. later this year.

With growing demand for hormone replacement therapy and pain management, the pharmacy needs more room to produce eye drops and vitamin injections.

"We're about to pop in our space," Meeker said. "It's not the greatest area right now, but it is surrounded by great areas. My hope is by jumping in there and making improvements, it will encourage the city to follow suit. If everyone in business and the city do their part, this area could be thriving soon. We have an eye-care business on one side and a day spa on the other. For our patients, that's perfect — eyes, medicine, massage all have the same demographics."

Contractor Jim Akery last September cleared off two houses built in 1948 that over the years have hosted everything from tattoo parlors and palm readers to kids' clothing resellers and vagrants. In their place, a 3,200-square-foot building will go in with retail health and wellness products available on the ground floor. Compounding work will take place upstairs.

Meeker has expanded operations beyond Jackson County as well, purchasing Rx Med Lab on Beacon Street in Grants Pass last November.

"It's aligned with what we're doing here," she said. "It's small, but doing very similar business."
