Opening soon

Dick's Sporting Goods and Field & Stream will open soon under one roof at Northgate Marketplace in Medford.

The retailers will open the first week of October, with a three-day grand opening set for Oct. 7-9.

The 89,000-square-foot store is Dick's Sporting Goods' eighth Oregon location, but the Field & Stream store is the first in the state. Four Dick's stores are clustered in the Portland suburbs plus operations in Bend, Eugene and Salem.

It's a busy time for the 68-year-old chain based near Pittsburgh as it scrambles to open stores in time for the holiday season. At present, Dick's operates more than 660 stores. Chief Operating Officer Andre Hawaux said last month Dick's anticipated opening 36 stores during 2016 and relocating nine more. The company expects to open nine Field & Stream stores, including eight in the combined stores such as the one on Rossanley Drive.

The Medford Dick's store is among the first to include a new and improved footwear section designed to offer a broad selection of sports performance and casual footwear.

Trail Blazers center Myers Leonard and former Oregon quarterback Joey Harrington will headline a cast of celebrities appearing at Dick's three-day grand opening.

On the Field & Stream side, a series of cable network show hosts, stars and outdoor writers are on the docket between Friday morning and Sunday afternoon. "Mountain Men" star Tom Oar, "Meateater" star Steve Rinella, hunter and writer Remi Warren, "Winchester Deadly Passion" host Melissa Bachman, "Savage Outdoors" host Mike Stroff, "Majesty Outdoors" host Bill Blodgett and fly fishing photographer Brian O'Keefe will make appearances.

During 2015, the chain reported revenue of $7.3 billion, and analysts project the figure to grow to $8.3 billion this year with the demise of competing The Sports Authority.

Last month, the chain said it was hiring 90 full- and part-time employees at each location. The stores open at 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday on opening weekend.
