Tarver, defense spark Oregon State

DAVIS, Calif. — Seth Tarver scored a career-high 23 points and Oregon State clamped down defensively in the second half to post a 73-59 win over UC Davis on Friday night.

Marcel Jones added 17 points and eight rebounds as the Beavers ran away with what had been a four-point game at halftime. Oregon State (4-3) held Davis to 25 points and 29 percent shooting in the second half and led by as many as 19 late in the half.

The Beavers, who should have 6-foot-11 Kansas-transfer C.J. Giles eligible after Monday, didn't need any help on the inside. Oregon State outrebounded the Aggies 35-27, 11 of which were on the offensive end. Rickey Claitt scored 11 for the Beavers.

UC Davis (4-5) has lost three straight after winning its first four home games of the season. Kyle Brucculeri and Vince Oliver each scored 11 points for the Aggies, who had 10 players score in the game.

The Aggies led 34-33 on Vince Oliver's jumper in the lane with 1:07 remaining in the first half. But Oregon State scored the last five points of the half, including Calvin Haynes' 3-pointer as time expired.

The Beavers then held UC Davis to just one field goal over the first 10 minutes of the second half.
