Queen Bees swarm Raiders

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Sluggish play in the first half gave way to a lop-sided second half Wednesday night during the first round of the women's NAIA Division II national basketball tournament.

Southern Oregon University shot 21 of 70 from the field and made only 2 of 22 from 3-point land as the 18th-ranked Raiders were outscored 42-30 in the second half en route to a 77-58 victory for No. 15-ranked Saint Ambrose University at the 32-team tournament.

SOU (29-5), the champions of the Cascade Collegiate Conference, trailed 35-28 at the half but ran out of gas over the final 20 minutes against Saint Ambrose, a school from Davenport, Iowa.

Freshman guard Ali Dolphin lit up the Raiders for a career-high 30 points on 12 of 24 shooting. She also had 14 rebounds — 11 offensive — and six steals to help force SOU into 25 turnovers.

Dolphin, the newcomer of the year in the Midwest Collegiate Conference, also helped the fourth-seeded Queen Bees (29-5) in attacking the Raider defense, resulting in 37 free-throw attempts.

Sophomore Jenny Clark, the MCC player of the year, added 21 points on 7-of-16 shooting to go with four assists and six steals. Saint Ambrose finished with 18 steals.

SOU did manage to win the battle on the boards, out-rebounding the Queen Bees 63-50, with 25 of those coming on the offensive end.

Jackie Speer collected 13 rebounds for the fifth-seeded Raiders, while Ashley Baker pulled down 10.

Senior guard Chelsey Muri, Southern Oregon's leading scorer and Cascade Conference player of the year, finished with just seven points and five assists, while turning the ball over 10 times.

Raider 3-point marksman Whitney Scott also struggled, shooting 3-of-16 from the field and 0-for-6 from beyond the 3-point line.

Saint Ambrose advances to a Sweet 16 game against Morningside on Friday.

The Queen Bees dropped a 75-65 decision to Morningside in the second game of the season on Nov. 3.
