SOU opens conference play with sweep of NCC

ASHLAND — Southern Oregon University's Joelle Riekeman pitched a gem in the second game of a Cascade Collegiate Conference doubleheader as the Raiders swept Northwest Christian College, 7-3, 2-1, in their conference opener.

Riekeman only allowed one run in the contest when the Raiders couldn't provide much offense.

SOU (4-10, 2-0 CCC) had just one hit in the contest, but capitalized on five Beacon errors.

With runners at second and third in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Raiders' Ricci Coultas hit the ball back to NCC pitcher Darci Byrne, who made a poor throw to first base and two runs scored, giving SOU a 2-0 lead.

Later, Cassie Bishop's home run brought the Beacons within one, but SOU was able to hang on for the win.

In the first game, the Raiders overcame an early deficit and pulled away with Bailey Price's two-run single in the third inning..
