Beavers salvage series finale with Cougars
PULLMAN, Wash. — Ryan Ortiz led Oregon State with four hits for the second straight game, and the Beavers rapped out 17 hits in a 19-9 victory over Washington State in their Pac-10 Conference baseball series finale Monday at Bailey-Brayton Field.
Every Oregon State player had at least one hit and one RBI, and eight of the nine posted at least one walk or hit by pitch. The Beavers scored three in the second, six in the third, two in the fifth, five in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Ortiz finished with two doubles and two singles, driving in three. The four hits tied the career high he set Sunday. In the last two games, Ortiz was 8-for-11 with three doubles and four RBI.
Joey Wong drove in four runs and had two hits. John Wallace, Jason Ogata and Chris Hopkins also had two hits each for OSU (21-18, 9-9 Pac-10). Ogata, Ortiz and Lonnie Lechelt each had three RBIs.
Oregon State starter Jorge Reyes lasted four innings in his 11th start. He allowed seven hits and eight runs but did not figure in the decision.
Mark Grbavac (4-1) got the win. The right-handed reliever worked four full innings, allowing just one hit.
