SOU drops a close one at Azusa

AZUSA, Calif. — In a battle of NAIA-ranked women's basketball teams, Azusa Pacific held off every challenge from Southern Oregon and came away with a 68-67 victory Monday at Azusa Pacific's Cougar Classic.

Azusa Pacific, ranked fifth in the NAIA Division I poll, improved to 9-2 with the victory. Southern Oregon, ranked 20th in the latest NAIA Division II rankings, dropped to 9-2 overall. SOU wraps up the Cougar Classic today when they take on Hope International.

"Of course a win would have been nice, but we wanted to play this game to get ready for the rest of the season and the tough games ahead of us," SOU Head Coach Lynn Kennedy said. "I think this says a lot about our team to have shot to win it at the end."

Juniors Ashley Baker and Jacki Speer both turned in double-doubles for the Raiders. Baker finished with a team-high 15 points and 12 rebounds. Speer had 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Men's Basketball

WILLAMETTE 95, SOUTHERN OREGON 81 — At Salem, Willamette trailed early but built a 53-37 halftime margin and led by as many as 25 points in the second half.

The Raiders (3-9) jumped out to a 9-6 lead, then the Bearcats went on a 8-0 run and never trailed again.

Scott Tiefenthaler led SOU with 21 points on 8-for-11 shooting. Humphrey Jackson finished with 19 points and Ryon Poll had 11 points for the Raiders.

Cameron Mitchell paced Willamette (4-3) with a game-high 24 points and a game-high 19 rebounds.
