Southern Oregon wins four titles at Cougar Open

CLACKAMAS — The fifth-ranked Southern Oregon wrestling team came away with four individual titles at the Cougar Open on Saturday.

Trevor Lofstedt (133 pounds), Barry Johnson (141), Seth Roy (149) and Tommie Hooper (157) all claimed titles for the Raiders.

Freshman Mitchell Lofstedt finished second at 125.

Trevor Lofstedt and Johnson both used pins to march to the finals.

Trevor Lofstedt had pins in both his opening match and semifinal match before knocking off unattached Oregon State wrestling Tyler Phillips in the finals 5-0.

Johnson used four straight pins before defeating Clackamas Community College's Kyle Wirkuty 3-1 in overtime.

Men's Basketball

CASCADE 100, SOUTHERN OREGON 99, OT — At Portland, Ben Pawlak had 21 points, including the game-winning shot in overtime, to give Cascade College another big win one night after knocking off top-ranked Oregon Tech.

Josh McDermott and Eli Thornton both had 21 points for Southern Oregon (5-13, 3-6 CC). Jarrad Childs had 19 points and Humphrey Jackson finished with 11 points.

The Raiders were up 35-30 with 7:00 left in the first half after shooting 63 percent from the field and 80 percent from 3-point range, but Cascade (10-6, 3-5) closed out the half on a 29-7 run to lead 59-42.

After trailing by as much as 21 early in the second half, the Raiders rallied to tie the game at 89-all with 1:18 to play on a basket by Childs.

Jackson opened the overtime period for SOU with a steal and layup to give SOU a 93-91 lead.

The game was tied at 94-94 when Pawlak nailed a 3-pointer and then made a free throw to complete a rare four-point play to give Cascade a 98-94 lead.

The Raiders came right back and cut the lead to one on a 3-pointer by McDermott with 1:23 to play.

After a Cascade miss, Scott Tiefenthaler made a pair of free throws with 20 seconds to play to give SOU the lead back at 99-98.

But at the end it was Pawlak again, hitting a jumper with five seconds left to give Cascade the victory.

Women's Basketball

SOUTHERN OREGON 81, CASCADE 65 — At Portland, junior Emily Brookins took advantage of her first start of the season to finish with a team-high 18 points.

Southern Oregon's Rhiannon Dickison and Jacki Speer both had 17 points. Speer also had 11 rebounds, while junior Ashley Baker finished with a game-high 15 rebounds and eight points for the Raiders (13-4, 5-3 CC).

Kristina Schumacher led Cascade (8-7, 1-7) with 20 points.

Brookins started off the game with a pair of 3-pointers and nine points in the first four minutes. The former Crater High standout had 13 points in the first half as the Raiders led 32-29.

In the second half, Cascade made a run to tie the game at 35-35 before SOU exploded on a 24-9 run to take control.
