Southern Oregon women wrap up playoff spot

ASHLAND — The 23rd-ranked Southern Oregon women's basketball team wrapped up a playoff spot for the third straight year with a 71-55 victory over Cascade College Friday at McNeal Pavilion.

SOU improved to 20-4 overall and 12-3 in the Cascade Conference. Cascade College dropped to 10-12 and 3-12.

The Raiders have nine straight games and have won 20 games in a season for the eighth time in school history.

Jacki Speer led SOU with 24 points and 18 rebounds, including eight offensive boards. Rhiannon Dickison finished with 21 points and Whitney Scott had 13 points.

Southern Oregon jumped out to a 38-28 halftime lead after big halves by Speer and Dickison. Speer went for 14 points and nine rebounds in the first 20 minutes, and Dickison had 10 points and a pair of 3-pointers.

Men's Basketball

SOUTHERN OREGON 72, CASCADE 69 — At Ashland, Jarrad Childs scored 22 points and Southern Oregon held Cascade to one point in a five-minute stretch at McNeal Pavilion.

Southern Oregon (8-16, 6-9 Cascade Conference), moved into sole possession of seventh place. Cascade is 11-12 and 4-11.

Childs finished with 22 points on 8-for-15 shooting and had a team-high seven rebounds. Humphrey Jackson finished with 11 points and five assists, and Eli Thornton had 10 points and five assists.

The two teams battled back and forth in the first half as Cascade held a slim 38-37 lead at the half.
