SOU uses furious rally to top OIT

ASHLAND — Whitney Scott made a last-second layup and free throw to give No. 21-ranked Southern Oregon an improbable and thrilling, 80-78 women's basketball victory over rival Oregon Tech Tuesday at McNeal Pavilion.

The Raiders trailed by 15 points with just over five minutes left before storming back for in the Cascade Conference matchup for their 11th straight triumph. The win avenged their most recent loss, a 78-74 setback to the Owls on Jan. 6.

Southern Oregon is 22-4 overall and 14-3 in conference. The Owls dropped to 13-13 and 6-11.

The Raiders were led by Scott's 20 points, three assists and three steals. She moved over the 1,000-point plateau for her career.

Rhiannon Dickison added 19 points and eight rebounds, and Jacki Speer contributed 16 points and 11 rebounds for her 17th double-double of the season. She moved into eighth place on SOU's career rebound list.

Oregon Tech's Kellie Morey finished with a game-high 22 points and seven rebounds.

Leading 40-31 at halftime after holding SOU to 36-percent shooting, Oregon Tech continued to pour it on the second half and led 50-37 just three minutes into the half.

With 5:05 left, the Raiders found themselves down 74-59, but they still had something up their sleeves.

Fueled by a lockdown, full-court press and excellent defense, the Raiders rallied to take the lead 75-74 on a Speer free throw. OIT regained the lead, but the Raiders took it back, 77-76, with 1:09 to play on a Speer jumper.

The Owls answered with a jumper with 21 seconds to play to regain the lead at, 78-77.

SOU then put it in the hands of Scott who drove, scored and was fouled with seven seconds to go. After the free throw, the Raiders led 80-78, and their defense made it stand up.

SOU finishes its regular-season home schedule Friday against Northwest Christian.
